Here you will find further information on how I can support you to find freedom from trauma, including PTSD and CPTSD.
Find Freedom and Healing from PTSD and Trauma
Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events (NHS, 2023).
Going through very stressful, frightening or distressing events is sometimes called trauma. When we talk about emotional or psychological trauma, we might mean:
- situations or events we find traumatic
- how we’re affected by our experiences.
Traumatic events can happen at any age and can cause long-lasting harm. Everyone has a different reaction to trauma, so you might notice any effects quickly, or a long time afterwards. (Mind, 2020)
Complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD) can be characterised by repeated exposure to a traumatic event or situation.
The definition of trauma varies across organisations. The one thing that all definitions accept is that trauma is a stressful, frightening or distressing event. You do not need to have a diagnosis of trauma to seek treatment. You do not need anyone else to verify your experience.
If you’ve experienced trauma, whether it’s from childhood, recent events, military or first responder related incidents, know that you’re not alone.
Each individual has different tolerance levels and everyone copes in different ways. What you may experience as a stressful, frightening or distressing event may be experienced differently by someone else. There are also many occasions when your body may experience a trauma response and you have no conscious awareness of what is happening. This is common for people who suffer from any physical and physiological symptoms with no biological cause. Some common symptoms include flashbacks, memories and dreams of events from the past, as well as significant rumination and replaying situations in your mind. The list below is not exhaustive, since everyone experiences trauma differently, everyone can present with different signs and symptoms of trauma, but the list below can give you some examples of physical expressions of trauma:
- IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and other digestive disorders
- Fibromyalgia
- Insomnia and sleep issues
- Migraines
- Excessive sweating
- Unexplained physical sensations such as tingling and numbness in your body
- Body focussed repetitive behaviours (BFRB): excessive nail biting and/or hair pulling (trichotillomania)
- Alcohol and drug use
Sometimes, you may experience multiple symptoms at the same time. The symptoms can last years, even decades.
As well as physical expressions of trauma, there are mental and emotional manifestations too. Some of these may include:
- Anxiety
- stress
- depression
- persistent nervousness
- feelings of shame and guilt
- feeling of impending doom (existential crisis)
- feeling irritable
- withdrawn
- changes in your personality
- Immediate/inappropriate reactions to situations
- Self-sabotaging your efforts to achieve your goals or make a change
- Imposter syndrome
- Dissociation (feeling disconnected)
Again, it is important to note the above are only some examples. You may experience trauma symptoms differently to someone else. It is also important to note that experiencing the above symptoms does not automatically mean you have experienced trauma or need help.
